Dry efficiently with the Wet Trimming Method!

The harvesting and trimming phase is a source of dread for many growers, as it demands significant time and effort. To guarantee the finest crop quality, it is imperative not to hasten through this process. The drying stage holds paramount importance and has the potential to determine your success or failure.

When plants are dried too quickly, it can result in a less pleasant taste due to trapped chlorophyll, pigments, starch, and nitrates. On the other hand, slow drying over five to seven days or longer allows for even moisture evaporation, preserving essential oils that contribute to the flower’s quality and flavour.

To achieve successful drying, maintain ideal conditions, including a dark room with air temperatures between 18-24 degrees Celsius and humidity between 45% to 55%. Temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius slow down drying, while humidity above 80% increases the risk of mould. Conversely, temperatures exceeding 29 degrees Celsius lead to overly fast drying and harsh-tasting products.

For an efficient drying setup, you’ll need the following items:

  1. Thermometer/Hygrometer: To monitor temperature and humidity accurately.
  2. Wall Fan: To maintain air circulation in the drying area.
  3. Carbon Filter Kit: To recycle air and eliminate odours, if applicable.
  4. Dry Rack: A breathable and suitable surface for drying your plant matter.

Smaller harvests can be dried in a small tent or cupboard, while larger harvests require more space.

The most effective and time-saving method is the “wet trim.” After the flowering cycle, trim the plants’ flowers using a trimmer before starting the drying process. Once trimmed, set up your drying racks in a well-ventilated space and equip it with a carbon filter to maintain air flow and reduce odours. Position wall fans to promote air circulation but avoid pointing them directly at the drying racks to prevent uneven drying.

Place the trimmed flowers on the drying rack in a single layer, ensuring they don’t touch each other to prevent mould growth. Remember the motto, “If in doubt, spread it out.”

Throughout the drying process, constantly rotate and “toss” your plant matter to maximize ventilation and minimize mould risk. Some experts suggest tossing the flowers 2-3 times a day, but for added safety, consider doing it 4-5 times a day. The extra effort will pay off in preserving your yield.

After 7 to 10 days, your product should be evenly dried and ready for consumption. If you need guidance or tips during this process, feel free to visit your local Just Hydroponics store, where experienced growers can assist you in perfecting the art of drying.
